MODERN FOODS SOLD IN THE SUPERMARKET ARE NOT MORE THAN A COCKTAIL OF CHEMICAL
First of all, i’m agree with the above statement. Nowadays, all foods are made up of various type of chemicals such flavouring agent, coloring agent and acidulants . It is common that all food products are added with food additives.
What is food additives?Food additives are any substances that added into food. It can divide into two groups which is direct additive and indirect additives. Direct additive is a substance that added to food for a specific purpose in that food while indirect additives are those in trace amounts in food due to its packaging, storage or other handling. Actually there are several purpose of using food additives. First of all, it can help in improve nutritional quality of food.Besides that, it also can help in improve keeping quality of food and thus reduce wastage. Furthermore, it help to provide ingredients for consumers with specific nutritional requirements. At last, it also aid in manufacturing process and to improve the consistency,texture and other sensory properties such as taste,aroma and color.
Here are several examples of chemical that are added in food. Vanillan and Ethyl Vanillan will give vanilla flavour in ais cream. Menthol gives mint flavour. Ethyl Butyrate and Benzyl alcohol give fruity flavour. Benzaldehyde give cherry flavour. Cinnamaldehyde give cinnamon flavour.
